Harahan History

Harahan was named after James T. Harahan, who was the president of the Illinois Central Railroad. Harahan Elementary, which is located along Jefferson Highway, is a notable structure that was enlisted in the Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The city is located in Jefferson Parish, which was founded in 1825 and was named after Thomas Jefferson of Virginia.
