Marksville History

The city of Marksville is the parish seat in Avoyelles Parish. The city was named after Mark Elishe, who established a trading post after his wagon broke down in this area. The city came in to being almost 190 years after the trading post was established. The city’s earliest settlers were the Tunica and Biloxi tribe and occupied the land for over two centuries. They spoke in different dialects. It was after the trading post was established that the city started developing.
