Morgan City History

Morgan City is in Saint Mary Parish. The city is situated on the banks of the Atchafalaya River. It was originally called Tiger Island by surveyors who were appointed by U.S. Secretary of War, John Calhoun. Later on, the name of the city was changed to Brashear City. In fact, it was named after Walter Brashear who was a prominent Kentucky physician. The city was incorporated in the year 1860. In the year 1876, the city's name was changed to Morgan City as a tribute to Charles Morgan who was a rail and steamship magnate.
