Ruston History

The city of Ruston is the parish seat in Lincoln Parish. The community was named after R.E. Russ, a landowner. During the era of reconstruction, Robert E. Russ donated 640 acres of land. This area eventually came to be known as Ruston, which is shorthand of Russ Town. Ruston persisted to grow steadily during the late 1940s. The GI Bill helped fuel the local economy, causing wonderful growth at the local universities and introduced many new families to Ruston. By the late 1950s, it was decided that a new expressway highway was to be built that would run through the northern part of the city. Completed by the year 1970, this coast - to - coast expressway made Ruston more easily accessible.
