Saco, Maine, in York county, is 14 miles SW of Portland, Maine and 85 miles N of Boston, Massachusetts. There are an estimated 16,822 people in the city.

Saco History

Saco was originally inhabited by the Sokoki tribe of Abenaki Indians. In 1630, the Plymouth Company granted the land to Richard Bonython and Thomas Lewis. It was renamed Saco in 1653. In fact, the city derived its name from an Algonquian term meaning “river mouth.” The city was incorporated in 1867. The Saco Iron Works was established here in 1811.
