Agawam History

William Pynchon, a rich explorer, bought land on either side of the River Connecticut from the local Pocomtuc Indians on July 13, 1636. This area, known as Agawam, covered what is today Springfield and West Springfield, Massachusetts. The price he paid for the Agawam region was 10 hatchets, 10 hoes, 10 coats, 10 knives, and 10 fathoms of wampum. Later Agawam and West Springfield separated from Springfield to become the parish of Springfield in the year 1757. They again split to form individual towns in 1800. The town of Agawam was officially incorporated on May 17, 1855.
