Marblehead History
Marblehead was first inhabited by the planters of Salem. The city was primarily inhabited by Indians until a smallpox epidemic killed most of them. The town was called Marblehead by settlers who mistook the granite ledges along the river shore for marbles. The old inhabitants of Marblehead were involved in the American Revolutionary Freedom Movement.
