New Mexico has more than 130,000 students enrolled in nearly 50 colleges and career schools. A large percentage of these are public. New Mexico is one of four states where public institutions represent more than 55% of their post-secondary schools. In addition, more than nine out of ten students in New Mexico are enrolled in these public institutions. Only two US states have a higher percentage of students in public schools.
There are only three colleges in New Mexico with more than 10,000 students. These are the University of New Mexico (more than 25,000 students), Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute (a public school with more than 20,000 students), and New Mexico State University (more than 20,000 students in 2 locations).
New Mexico does not have many community colleges, only four as of 2005. In addition, only about 30% of its schools are for-profit. Typically, community colleges and for-profit schools provide career-focused training options for students. One of the more interesting examples of this is the Southwest Acupuncture College, with locations in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
