Introduction to Allendale, New Jersey
The area now known as Allendale was a wilderness territory inhabited only by Native Indians until the 1700s. Gradually, a community was established, and named "Allendale" after a surveyor of the Erie Railroad, Col. William C. Allen. The region underwent considerable development and growth following the arrival of the Paterson & Ramapo Railroad in 1848. Allendale was formally established on November 8th, 1894, during the Boroughitis phenomenon which was sweeping through Bergen County. It was created from parts of the Orvil Township, the Hohokus Township, and the Franklin Township.
