Allendale History
The area now known as Allendale was a wilderness terriotry inhabited only by Native Indians until the 1700s. Gradually, a community was established, and named "Allendale" after a surveyor of the Erie Railroad, Col. William C. Allen. The region underwent considerable development and growth following the arrival of the Paterson & Ramapo Railroad in 1848. Allendale was formally established on November 8th, 1894, during the Boroughitis phenomenon which was sweeping through Bergen County. It was created from parts of the Orvil Township, the Hohokus Township, and the Franklin Township.

Allendale offers easy access to numerous museums and historical sites. The American Museum of Natural History has more than 40 permanent exhibition halls and research laboratories with over 32 million specimens. The American Folk Art Museum features 18th and 19th century paintings and sculptures as well as contemporary works of art. The Old Stone House Museum, the Pascack Historical Society Museum, the Schoolhouse Museum, the Elizabeth Cady Stanton House, Ringwood Manor, and the Van Riper-Hopper House are also close by. Allendale is home to the Celery Farm, a nature preserve with numerous animals and exotic birds including Pileated Woodpeckers, Bald Eagles, deer, rabbits, and turtles. Crestwood Park, located in the borough, includes a man-made lake, three beaches, a recreational barn, four tennis courts, and baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer fields. Among other popular attractions in the area are Bergen County Zoological Park, the George Washington Bridge, the New Jersey Botanical Garden, and the Glen Rock Arboretum.
