The region underwent considerable development and growth following the arrival of the Paterson & Ramapo Railroad in 1848. Allendale was formally established on November 8th, 1894, during the Boroughitis phenomenon which was sweeping through Bergen County. It was created from parts of the Orvil Township, the Hohokus Township, and the Franklin Township.
