Introduction to Belmar, New Jersey
In the mid 1800s, around 25 investors built a summer community in the area that is now known as Belmar. This location was preferred because of its proximity to the sea, giving residents the opportunity to fish. Belmar was officially incorporated as Ocean Beach borough in 1885. The community derives its current name from an Italian term meaning beautiful sea.
