Glen Ridge History
In 1666, sixty-four families from Connecticut purchased land in the area and named it New Ark. Prior to that, Lenni Lenape Native American tribes occupied this region. The territory of New Ark comprised the present-day towns of Montclair, Nutley, Bloomfield and Belleville. In 1812, Bloomfield was incorporated as a separate township. At that time, Glen Ridge was a rural community consisting of woodlands and farms. The Newark and Bloomfield Railroad arrived in the area in 1856, followed by the New York & Greenwood Lake Railway in 1872, leading to significant development of the Glen Ridge region. It gradually emerged as a suburbal residential community. On February 13, 1895, Glen Ridge was officially incorporated. Singer Connie Francis and actor Tom Cruise once resided in Glen Ridge, which was also the filming location for movies like "Stepmom," "Mona Lisa Smile," and "Winter Solstice."
