Introduction to Wantage, New Jersey
The area that is now referred to as Wantage was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. Dutch settlers arrived in the area sometime in the 17th century. Local lore suggests that this township was either named after Wantage in England, or based on an Indian word, which means "wise speaker."
