Introduction to Geneseo, New York
Geneseo, New York, in Livingston county, is 26 miles SW of Rochester, New York (center to center) and 54 miles E of Buffalo, New York. It is part of the surrounding Rochester metro area, and is home to some 7,579 residents.
Geneseo History
This region was once the largest Seneca village of the Iroquois nation. The name "Geneseo" is the anglicized version of the original Iroquois name "Gen-nis-he-yo", meaning "beautiful valley". During the American Revolution, residents of this village joined hands with the British and Tories, and fought against General Washington's forces. In 1790, James and William Wadsworth arrived and established a village. In 1821, the village of Geneseo became the seat of Livingston County, and was officially incorporated in 1832. The United States Department of the Interior designated the Geneseo Historic District as a National Historic Landmark in 1991.

The Geneseo Historic District includes the area's historic commercial center and the 102.8-acre Wadsworth estate. Several other 19th century buildings in the area include the Geneseo Baptist Church, the Soldiers Monument, Temple Hill Cemetery, and the Old Antheum Library. Genesee Country Village & Museum is New York State's largest living historic museum. The Genesee Valley Hunt, the oldest hunt club in the nation, is now the center of equestrian activities. The Letchworth State Park, which is spread across more than 14,000 acres, offers opportunities for swimming, camping, hot air ballooning, and horseback riding. In addition, the community organizes several festivals throughout the year including the Geneseo Air Show, the Memorial Day Parade, Conesus Lake Ring of Fire, Genesee Valley Hunt Races, and ChristmaSing.
