Introduction to Geneseo, New York
Geneseo, New York, in Livingston county, is 26 miles SW of Rochester, New York (center to center) and 54 miles E of Buffalo, New York. It is part of the surrounding Rochester metro area, and is home to some 7,579 residents.
This region was once the largest Seneca village of the Iroquois nation. The name "Geneseo" is the anglicized version of the original Iroquois name "Gen-nis-he-yo", meaning "beautiful valley". In 1790, James and William Wadsworth arrived and established a village. In 1821, the village of Geneseo became the seat of Livingston County, and was officially incorporated in 1832. The United States Department of the Interior designated the Geneseo Historic District as a National Historic Landmark in 1991.
