Geneseo History

This region was once the largest Seneca village of the Iroquois nation. The name "Geneseo" is the anglicized version of the original Iroquois name "Gen-nis-he-yo", meaning "beautiful valley". During the American Revolution, residents of this village joined hands with the British and Tories, and fought against General Washington's forces. In 1790, James and William Wadsworth arrived and established a village. In 1821, the village of Geneseo became the seat of Livingston County, and was officially incorporated in 1832. The United States Department of the Interior designated the Geneseo Historic District as a National Historic Landmark in 1991.
