The land around Lake Ronkonkoma once belonged to Native Americans. They sold it to Europeans but made sure that it was never under the control of a single authority. Even today, the lake is under the jurisdiction of three different towns, including Brookhaven, Smithtown and Islip. Due to the presence of the lake, this area was popular as a resort town until it underwent a population explosion during the middle of the 20th century.
