Ossining, New York, in Westchester county, is 10 miles NW of White Plains, New York and 29 miles N of New York, New York. The village is located in the New York metropolitan area. Ossining has a population of 24,010.

Ossining History

Frederick Philipse was one of the earliest landowners of this area. In 1685, he bought land in this region from the Sint Sinck Indians. This area eventually developed into the present day town of Ossining. Philipse also built a manor that extended from Spuyten Duyvil Creek to Croton River. The village of Sing Sing was incorporated in 1813. In 1845, a new town was created from the northern part of the Town of Mount Pleasant, which became Ossining.

Ossining lies in a region of great natural beauty. The vast areas of parkland and the nearby Atlantic Ocean make for a very asthetic combination. The area also has two golf courses that overlook the ocean and offer excellent playing opportunities. Those interested in learning mroe about the past of the area should visit the Philipsburg Manor, which was built by an early settler.
