North Carolina has more than 150 colleges and career schools, and more than 475,000 students attending them. In fact, only nine US states can boast a larger total student population. A significant percentage of these schools require an SAT score for admission - more than a third. Only four other US states have more than a third of their colleges and career schools requiring SATs.
Almost half of North Carolina's post secondary schools are public, and as a result North Carolina's more than 75 public schools ranks as the 7th highest in the country. As a result, there are a smaller number of for-profit schools, with just over 20% of the schools being for-profit, and less than one in fifty of North Carolina's students go to for-profit schools. For-profit schools typically provide career-focused training, and that need appears to be met in North Carolina by community colleges, with more than 55 of them in the state.
The largest college is The University of North Carolina with more than 60,000 students. The school has locations in Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Greensboro, Wilmington, and Pembroke. North Carolina State University is the next largest college with more than 30,000 students. There are six other colleges with more than 10,000 students. Perhaps the best known of these is Duke University.
