The city benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns with which it shares the Charlotte - Gastonia - Rock Hill metropolitan area. Bessemer City has a population of approximately 5,119.

Bessemer City History

In 1754, King George II of England made a land grant to James Ormand and Adam Meek. The Ormand Mining Company, which was subsequently established by James Ormand, operated until the mid-19th century. During the 1840s, cotton, corn, and whiskey production were major contributors to the economy. The area now known as Bessemer City was purchased from the Ormand family by Sir Henry Bessemer who invented the "Bessemer Process" which was used for smelting iron. The city was named in his honor, and incorporated on March 6th, 1893.

Things To Do In Bessemer City

Historic Rural Hill Farm, the former home of Major John and Violet Davidson, is now a historic site featuring walking trails and guided tours of historic buildings. Kings Mountain National Military Park, and Latta Plantation are other places of historic interest near Bessemer City. The Schiele Museum, and Gaston County Museum of Art and History have artifacts reflecting the natural and cultural heritage of the region. The city also offers easy access to the Green River where visitors can enjoy floating trips on the rapids. The South Mountain State Park offers views of the mountain range and waterfalls and also provides opportunities for the enjoyment of mountain biking, trout fishing, picnicking, and primitive and equestrian camping. Paramount's Carowinds Water & Theme Park, and Crowders Mountain State Park are other popular parks in the area.
