Mount Airy, North Carolina, in Surry county, is 34 miles NW of Winston-Salem, North Carolina (center to center) and 89 miles N of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Mount Airy was initially incorporated in 1885. In 1889, a large granite quarry was established, followed by a furniture factory a several years later. By 1895, Mount Airy was home to numerous tobacco factories. On July 15, 1976, the community was reincorporated as a city. Mount Airy was the hometown of actor Andy Griffith, and it also served as the filming location for the movie "Cabin Fever."
