Smithfield, North Carolina is 24 miles SE of Raleigh, North Carolina.It is in Johnston county. The town is part of the Raleigh - Durham - Chapel Hill metro area. The population of Smithfield is 11,510.

Smithfield History

Smithfield was officially incorporated in 1777. It was founded by John Smith, a native of Virginia. The town was also named after its founder. However, the area was originally known as Smith’s Ferry. It became the county seat of Johnston County in 1771. Smithfield is the hometown of Ava Gardner, the Academy Award-nominated American actress who is also known as one of the greatest stars of the American Film Institute.
