The township of Bedford, which was created on April 7, 1823, included the present-day communities of Oakwood Village, Maple Heights, Bedford, Bedford Heights, and Walton Hills. Bedford Heights became an independent community and was officially incorporated as a village on February 20, 1951. In 1958, Bedford Heights was granted city status, and the charter took effect in 1960.
