Girard History
In 1798, a group of land speculators purchased the entire Connecticut Western Reserve. This land was then divided amongst the men, and Liberty Township was created from a part of it. This township was surveyed again and divided into 25 lots. The area now known as Girard was one of these lots. Hieronimus Eckman and his family, who were the first settlers, arrived in Girard in 1802. The community was officially founded in 1836. In the following years, it prospered due to the construction of the Pennsylvania and the Ohio Canal, and the Cleveland and Mahoning Railroad. During the late 19th century, industry grew significantly, especially that of iron and steel. Girard was incorporated as a village in 1893, and it was granted city status in 1921. According to records, the community was named in honor of philanthropist Stephen Girard.
