Wellston History

Wellston, which was a land known for its abundant resources of superior quality coal, was founded by Harvey Wells and named in his honor. The town was laid out in November 1873, and the first iron furnace was constructed in 1874. This was shortly followed by the construction of many more furnaces. The growth and prosperity of the town continued with the development of railroads and new businesses, and Wellston was incorporated as a village in February 1876.
