McKees Rocks History

According to research and skeletal findings, this area was inhabited long before the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. The community was named "McKees Rocks" in honor of Alexander McKee, an 18th century landowner. In 1764, 1,300 acres were given to McKee. The second part of the town's name was due to the presence of a rocky projection into the river near this place. McKees Rocks was once known as a center for iron and steel manufacturing.

Things To Do In McKees Rocks

McKees Rocks Indian Mound, located in the "Bottoms" neighborhood, is a historic landmark indicating the site where the oldest human skeletons in eastern North America were discovered. Artifacts of historical importance can also be viewed at the nearby Frick Art & Historical Center, Fort Pitt Museum, and Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Old Economy Village is a historic site where a Harmony Society community was founded in 1824. Raccoon Creek State Park, occupying an area of more than 7,300 acres, features a lake and also offers facilities for boating, hiking, fishing, camping, and picnicking. Among other notable attractions in the area are the National Aviary, Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, and Point State Park.
