Moosic History
The area now known as Moosic, which initially consisted of farmlands, was officially established on December 9th, 1898. In the past, the region has been referred to as "Marathon," and "Springbrook." According to sources, the name "Moosic" was taken from the Algonquian term for "elk mountain." Coal mining was the first industry in this community. The establishment of the Moosic Powder Company led to the development of the powder business in Moosic. This company was later taken over by Dupont Powder Mills which operated its plant in Moosic for almost a century. The Starks Breaker colliery also played a major role in the community's economy. Soon after its construction, other collieries established operations in Moosic which led to a significant increase in the population, and the collieries built company stores, houses, and boarding homes for their employees.
