Introduction to Red Lion, Pennsylvania
Red Lion, Pennsylvania, in York county, is 18 miles SW of Lancaster, Pennsylvania (center to center) and 40 miles N of Baltimore, Maryland.Part of the surrounding York metro area, the town is not an isolated and is home to some 6,149 residents.
Red Lion History
The area was first settled in 1852. The community was named after the Red Lion Tavern, which was one of the first pubs to be established in the area. At one point, various brands of cigar were manufactured in Red Lion. The town was also famous for its furniture industry. For more than 100 years, Red Lion had several factories producing ornate hand-crafted furniture. Over the last 40 years, the economy's focus has shifted towards retail stores and kitchen cabinet production. During the early 1900s, Red Lion served as a major stop along the now-defunct Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad.

The North Museum of Natural History & Science features natural history and science exhibits, while the Agricultural & Industrial Museum includes a reconstructed grist mill. Collections in the Folk Craft Center focus on the culture and lifestyle of Pennsylvania's German residents. Among other historic sites and museums near Red Lion are Gates House & Plough Tavern, James Buchanan House, Fulton Opera House, Historical Society Museum, and National Watch and Clock Museum. Facilities for hiking, biking, camping, boating, horseback riding, swimming, and picnicking are available at the Codorus State Park, Gifford Pinchot State Park, and Susquehannock State Park. The Red Lion Mile is one of the newest attractions in the town. This 1-mile walking and biking path is Red Lion's first ever rail trail. The community also hosts the Street Fair in August every year.
