A group of settlers, who arrived from New Sweden in 1653, set up mills. The Swedes introduced the concept of log cabins and the township has "The Swedish Cabin" which is believed to have been built in 1654. In 1736, Quakers settled and Upper Darby became an active community in the fight against slavery. Upper Darby Township was officially created on August 30th, 1736, following a split from the Darby Township. It was incorporated in 1907. The 20th century witnessed a population explosion in the community, and by the 1960s, Upper Darby had become one of the most populated municipalities in the state.
