West Columbia, South Carolina, in Lexington county, is 2 miles W of Columbia, South Carolina (center to center) and 86 miles S ofCharlotte, North Carolina. The city benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns with which it shares the Columbia metropolitan area. West Columbia contains a population of approximately 13,064.
West Columbia History
The city was originally incorporated in the year 1894 as Brookland; however, since there was another town by that name, the United States Postal Service decided to rename it New Brookland. In 1936, the name was again changed to West Columbia because of the region’s close proximity to Columbia. There are still many businesses, churches, and a high school that retain the Brookland and New Brookland names.
