Jefferson City History

Jefferson City was originally known as Mossy Creek. It was first settled in by Adam and Elizabeth Sharkey Peck in 1788. The first gristmill in the city was established in 1795. The first post office in present-day Jefferson City was established on November 21, 1816 and Willie Zount Peck was the first postmaster. The East Tennessee Railroad first entered the area in the late 1850s. Mossy Creek was incorporated as Jefferson City in 1901. It was named after Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States. W.T. Russell was the first mayor of the city.
