Introduction to Kaufman, Texas

Kaufman, Texas is 20 miles SE of Mesquite, Texas (center to center) and 31 miles SE of Dallas, Texas. Kaufman is located in Kaufman County and has a population of 6,490.

Kaufman History

This region was originally inhabited by the Caddo, Comanche, Cherokee, Delaware, and Kickapoo Indians. The first white settlers, who arrived in 1840, were comprised of forty families led by Dr. William P. King. King built a fort which caused the region to become known as Kings Fort. In the next few years the community continued to develop and was renamed Kingsboro. In 1846, it became part of the newly established Henderson County. Several years later, Kaufman County was founded on land taken from Henderson County. Kingsboro became a part of the new county and was renamed Kaufman. It was incorporated as a town in 1872.

Things To Do In Kaufman

Southfork Ranch a nearby attractions where the popular television series Dallas was filmed. The Little Chapel-in-the-Woods is a late 20th century chapel with stained glass windows that is considered to be one of the finest examples of architecture in the state. Other nearby attractions include Terrell Heritage Museum, Dallas World Aquarium, and Gov. Hogg Shrine Historic Site. The White Rock Lake Park is a 1015 acre park which allows outdoor activities like hiking and biking.
