Overview
As more people look to further their education, online degree programs provide another option to access higher education. Advantages of online education include the ability to take courses with flexible scheduling and to access courses anywhere a student has access to the internet. This is particularly important when a degree program is not offered locally. In addition, for people who work during the day, these factors allow them to access courses whenever it works best for them. Online courses work very similar to campus-based courses; except for the fact that students access the classroom over the internet.
To access the classroom, students typically use an online portal to attend lectures as well as download assignments and other handouts. For some courses, chat sessions are used to promote student-student and student-teacher interactions. In these situations, teachers will often require a minimum amount of participation to pass the course. In online education, lecture times can vary depending on the teacher and course. For some classes, lectures may be at set times that students must attend online, while for other classes, students can download lectures and study at their own pace. Since teachers cannot prevent students from using materials during exams, tests are often more in-depth. Students may also be required to take timed tests online during specific time periods. For online colleges in Texas, some classes will also allow students to access teachers on campus.
Even if you live in a city with multiple college options like Arlington, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston or San Antonio, colleges with online degree programs may still be a great option for you. Be sure to ask several questions when speaking with an admissions counselor. In terms of online education, some good questions include how do students access their classes, how much opportunity do students have to interact with teachers and fellow students and how do students typically take exams online.
Accreditations and affiliations: when speaking with an admissions counselor be sure to ask about the types of accreditations and affiliations the school has completed.
