Perryton, Texas, in Ochiltree county, is 99 miles NE of Amarillo, Texas (center to center) and 195 miles W of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The city is home to some 7,774 residents.
Perryton History
The history of Perryton dates back to the early 1900's when the region had two communities known as "Ochiltree" and "Gray". Residents of these two farming and ranching settlements needed a railroad for economic development. However, when a railroad was finally established, it was situated some distance away from these two communities which led to the merger of Ochiltree and Gray in 1919. It resulted in the birth of the new town, "Perryton", named in honor of the county judge, George M. Perry. At the time of its incorporation, advertisements attracted many settlers. Soon, the city had electrical and water distribution plants, and grain elevators, and gradually emerged as an agribusiness center. The "Sewer-Side Airport" was established near Perryton in 1932. The city grew more prosperous in the 1950s when oil and natural gas reserves were discovered close by. Perryton has been called the "Wheatheart of the Nation" since 1947.
