Overview
Online education has several advantages compared to traditional campus-based colleges. These advantages include courses with flexible scheduling and the ability to access programs and degrees that may not be available at a local college. This flexibility gives people an opportunity that, otherwise, might not exist because of work or other obligations. For people who wonder how online degree programs work, courses are very similar to traditional campus-based college classes; except for the fact that students access the classroom through the internet.
To access the classroom, most online programs have education portals where students can also download lectures, homework assignments and other handouts. Chat sessions are used to promote student-teacher and student-student interactions. For some classes, a minimum amount of participation in these sessions is required. When it comes to lectures, times vary depending on the course and the teacher. Some classes require students to attend online lectures at specific times. Other classes allow students to download or access lectures online at their own convenience. Exams also vary by course and teacher. For some courses, students take exams online during set time periods, while in other courses, students submit exams through email or the education portal. Some online degree programs are connected to a local college or university. In these situations, some teachers allow students to meet with them in person during office hours.
