Overview of American Military University
American Military University (AMU) began in 1991, when it was launched in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a resource for military students pursuing graduate degrees. As time went by, the University greatly expanded its course offerings and degree programs while also making them available beyond the military sector. The University today offers a fully-online program offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines. Although many of its programs focus on the areas of homeland security, national security and public safety, AMU also serves a variety of students seeking liberal arts and professional studies degrees.
Points of Distinction
Areas of Study
AMU offers over 100 degree and certificate programs at the Associate, Bachelor's, and Master's levels. All courses are online and they can be taken individually as well as part of a degree program. Specialized programs include military studies, strategic intelligence, homeland security, security management, and transportation and logistics management. However, there are an equally large number of more general programs leading to degrees in liberal arts, business, and advanced technology fields.
American Military University Admissions
The admissions process begins by completing and submitting an online application. As part of the process, the applicant will receive an AMU student ID number and password, which will be used every time he/she logs into the electronic campus. The applicant then receives an online orientation and is given 15 days to submit admission documents and forms, which are all accessible from the orientation and registration screens.
American Military University Faculty Quality
AMU's faculty members, just like their students, work and come from around the world. Many hold other teaching positions at some of the nation's top universities or are active professionals at the United Nations, the National Security Agency, U.S. military activities, or the business sector.
American Military University Student Body
AMU serves a student body of over 20,000 online students from 130 countries. Most of them are adults who hold positions within the military, in the greater public service sector (e.g., police, fire, emergency management personnel and national security professionals) or at organizations such as the State Department.
American Military University Student Life
The University's electronic campus is a typical academic community of professors, staff, administrators, and fellow students. Students are able to track their academic progress online and can enter their individual classrooms from the campus homepage. Once inside, they do all the same things they would do in a traditional class (take tests, do research, write papers, etc.), except they do them online. Asynchronous class discussions and group projects are conducted via the Internet. Students never have to physically travel to a campus or any other location. A graduation ceremony takes place once a year, in May or June, in the Washington D.C. area. Graduating students are invited to attend the commencement ceremony along with family members, but those who do not wish to participate in the ceremony will have their diploma and transcripts mailed to them.
