Founded in 1940, Barry University is a private Catholic university situated in Miami Shores, Florida. It is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami. U.S. News & World Report ranked the academic quality of Barry University as one of the strongest in South Florida in its 2005 Edition of America's Best Colleges.
The university offers more than 60 traditional undergraduate programs, accelerated bachelor's programs designed specifically for working adults and more than 50 graduate programs. The university is known for its nursing, health sciences, business, teacher education, and liberal arts programs.
Barry University became a member of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) in June 1988. Barry has won six NCAA championships, three of which in women’s soccer and two in volleyball.

One of the good things about Barry is its wide range of programs leading to degrees. Students at the school often study computer science and engineering, family and social work, and medical administration.
The admissions department at Barry does not accept all those who apply. Most students' verbal SAT scores were in the range of 420 to 510 in 2007-2008. A quarter of students admitted in 2007-2008 scored 500 or higher on the math SAT.
The school's tenure system is geared toward rewarding and keeping the most valuable professors.
The school offers classes to 8,733 students (8,388 full-time equivalent). Minorities are common at Barry. A large number of students at the school are 40 years old or older.
Barry does offer meal plans to students. Students sports include formal participation in Sunshine State Conference competitions.
