It is the national university of the Roman Catholic Church and the only institution of higher education founded by U.S. Roman Catholic bishops. It was established in 1887 as a graduate and research center. The university began offering undergraduate education in 1904.

CUA’s official mascot is the Cardinal. Its sports teams are nicknamed the Cardinals. The university sponsors more than 20 NCAA Division III sports teams.
