Christopher Newport University is a liberal arts university located in Hampton, Virginia. It was founded in 1961 as a two-year school of the College of William and Mary. It became a four-year college in 1971 and finally became a university in 1992. The university is named after Christopher Newport, the head of the mission which brought the earliest English settlers to Jamestown. The college offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study. It is organized into the following academic divisions:
