Originally established in 1963 as a satellite center for Lenoir County Technical Institute, the college offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study. Coastal is known for its continuing education and distance learning programs.

Coastal college's campus boasts an active student life. There are several student clubs and organizations which include the Student Government Association (SGA), Phi Theta Kappa, and many more. The college offers a wide variety of need based financial aid students.
