Columbia Gorge Community College was founded in 1977 as Wasco Area Education Service District. The college operates two campuses in Oregon, one in the Dalles and the other at Hood River Indian Creek.
The Dalles campus is located on the Columbia River, overlooking the Columbia River gorge. In 1989, the college's designation changed from service district to community college, and it was given its current name.
CGCC's partnership with Portland Community College allows it to offer credit instruction, degrees and certificates through the school. Its Degree Partnership Program also allows its students to enroll in classes at universities throughout Oregon, including Concordia University, Oregon State University, and Portland State University. Educational degrees are offered in areas like business, computer science, and criminal justice.
CGCC operates two student organizations, the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and the ASCGCC Student Council, which promotes recreational activities for the students.
