Eastern Illinois University is a Public State University and was established in 1895. EIU ranks in the top half of US News and Report's rankings of Masters Universities within the Midwest region. It was originally established as a teacher's college offering two-year degrees, but later it expanded its curriculum to include Bachelors and Masters degrees in fields of arts, sciences and humanities.
EIU enrolls more than 12,000 students each term and has over 2,000 faculty and staff. The university includes Colleges of Science, Education and Professional Studies, Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology Program, and the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences. Other academic divisions include the Graduate School, Honors College and School of Continuing Education.
EIU's sports teams are known as the Panthers.
