Florida State University or Florida State is a public research university, located in Tallahassee, Florida. It was established in 1851. FSU is ranked 15th nationally in the February 2008 edition of Kiplinger's Best Values in Public Colleges. FSU's main campus covers an area of 489 acres.
The University consists of 16 separate colleges and more than 35 centers, facilities, labs and institutes. FSU offers more than 300 programs of study, including professional programs. It is home to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.
The school's athletic teams are called the Seminoles. They participate in the NCAA's Division I and the Atlantic Coastal Conference.

The school has a greater breadth of degree programs (majors) than most colleges of its size. Florida State is known for its programs in music, real estate and construction management, family and social work, liberal arts, and construction trades.
Admission at the school is selective, not open to all who apply. Three quarters of students in 2007-2008 had SAT verbal scores of at least 550. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 560 and 650.
The school has a tenure system for senior faculty. The full-time faculty at Florida State is well-paid, which often goes with faculty quality.
In 2007-2008, the school had 40,555 students enrolled (28,441 full-time equivalent).
Florida State values student athletics, and belongs to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The school is a relative bargain, with lower tuition and fees than most schools offering similar degrees.
