It was established in the year 1946 as the College of Steubenville. The institution's name was changed to its current name in the year 1985. FUS offers various associate, undergraduate, and graduate degrees, as well as several certificate programs. Major degrees are provided in more than 30 diverse fields of study. The student body comprises of national and international students from all states and over 15 countries worldwide.

FUS participates in a wide variety of sports including rugby, baseball, and soccer, among others. Their athletic teams are nicknamed the Barons. They compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III.
