George Washington University is a private, coeducational university located in Washington, D.C. The school was chartered on February 9, 1821 as the Columbian College in the District of Columbia by an Act of Congress. Since that time it has developed into a nonsectarian research institution.
GU offers a variety of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in business, social sciences, international affairs, medicine, education, public health, and law. The main GW campus covers 43-acres and is located in downtown Foggy Bottom. GW is organized into nine schools and colleges, each with a different dean and organization.
The sports teams of GW are nicknamed Colonials and their official mascot is George. GW is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference and most of its teams play at the NCAA Division I level.

The school offers many areas of study. George Washington tries to provide students with lots of choices, and does not tend to focus on only a few programs of study. Fields of study in vogue at the school include liberal arts.
Not all applicants to George Washington are accepted. Just 37% of applicants in 2007-2008 were accepted at the school. The top quarter of students at George Washington scored at least 690 on the verbal SAT test. Students' math SAT scores were most often in the range 600 to 690 in 2007-2008.
The most successful professors at the school are given tenure, encouraging them to stay with the school for a long time. The George Washington teaching staff is well compensated compared to other schools.
Approximately 25,078 students study at the school (in 2007-2008).
George Washington makes housing available to a large share of its students. Students participate in Atlantic 10 Conference athletics.
