It was designated as Georgia's "Public Liberal Arts University" in 1996 by the Board of Regents. GCSU is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. its campus is spread across an area of more than 40 acres.

Some of the notable alumni of GCSU are author Flannery O'Connor, recording artist Andy Offutt Irwin and Tony Nicely, the Chairman, President and CEO of GEICO Insurance.
