The Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, is a public, coeducational research university in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1885, Georgia Institute of Technology - Main Campus occupies a large part of Midtown Atlanta.
Georgia Tech offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs through its six academic divisions:
Georgia Tech has remained in the top ten public universities in the United States for the last ten years. U.S. News & World Report (2008) ranked Georgia Tech as the No. 7 public university, and 35th among all universities.
The sports teams of Georgia Tech are nicknamed Yellow Jackets and their official mascot is Buzz.

The school is known for its programs in engineering, computer science and engineering, and architecture and planning.
Admission at Georgia Tech is selective, not open to all who apply. Three quarters of students in 2007 had SAT verbal scores of at least 590. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 650 and 730. Many applicants are from out of state, an indication of the quality or special character of the school.
The school has a tenure system for senior faculty. The full-time faculty at Georgia Tech is well-paid, which often goes with faculty quality.
In 2007, the school had 18,742 students enrolled (17,558 full-time equivalent). A very high share of students at Georgia Tech are male.
Full-time students are the norm at the school. Georgia Tech offers dorm rooms to a higher percentage of its students than do most colleges. The school values student athletics, and belongs to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
