Overview of Gibbs College
Gibbs College is one of two surviving offspring of the original Katherine Gibbs training institute, which was founded in Rhode Island in 1911 and referred to, back then, as the Providence School. The name was discarded, but the Gibbs-inspired approach and the access to the work force it provided to women were a popular success. So successful were they, in fact, that Gibbs’s white-gloved career women became an icon of American business in the years after World War II.
The workplace has changed in the past fifty years and Gibbs College has had to alter to keep pace, going coed in the 1980s and broadening its curriculum to embrace the more technical aspects of commercial education. Today it’s a widely-scoped, career-oriented college for both sexes. It shares common ownership and much of its curriculum with the Katherine Gibbs School, which is based in metropolitan New York. Both Gibbs College and Katherine Gibbs School are subsidiaries of the Career Education Corporation.
Points of Distinction
Areas of Study
Gibbs College offers certificates, Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Training & Network Support, Criminal Justice, Office Administration, Fashion, Visual Communications, Healthcare Education, Information Technology and Business Administration. But the curriculum can fluctuate from campus to campus. Be sure that the branch you expect to attend has the programs you are interested in taking.
Admissions
A high school diploma is required (a GED is also acceptable) but otherwise the admission process is relatively simple and non-oppressive: SATs and the like are not necessary. Classes start often so there are no specific deadlines for applying. Tuition assistance may be available for those who qualify.
Gibbs Faculty
Business professionals make up the bulk of the Gibbs College faculty, their object being to convey a usable understanding of the disciplines they teach based on real-world experience. The student-faculty ratio can fluctuate but hovers in the neighborhood of 20:1.
Student Body
Women form the majority of the student population at the school. All students commute; many work full- or part-time.
Student life
Students commute and campuses are classrooms, with neither playing fields nor dorms.
