Gulf Coast Community College was the first public two-year institution to open after the Florida Legislature established a statewide network of community colleges in 1957. It is one of 28 public community colleges in the state, all located within commuting distance of over 95% of Florida's population.
GCCC’s athletic department fields men’s and women’s sports teams in various sports like basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball. They are nicknamed the Commodores. Some of the notable alumni of the college are Michael Papajohn, American actor; Tony Dawson, former NBA Basketball player; and Frank Menechino, former Major League Baseball infielder for the Oakland Athletics.
