The university is a member of the NCAA Division II and participates in the Gulf South Conference. The men's teams of HSU participate in basketball, baseball, football, swimming, and tennis. The women's teams play basketball, golf, cross country, swimming, softball, and volleyball. The students of the university also operate a radio station on campus called KSWH-FM. Some of the notable alumni of HSU are Ken Duke, professional golfer; Sid McMath, two-term governor of Arkansas; and Lloyd L. Burke, Medal of Honor recipient.
