Overview
Founded in 1935, Hofstra is a private coeducational university sitting on a beautiful 240-acre campus in Hempstead, Long Island, only 25 miles east of New York City. Hofstra offers more than 140 undergraduate and 150 graduate programs covering a wide variety of subject areas. Of particular interest is the University's online program offering a Master of Science (MS) online degree in Computer Science. This degree can be earned completely online without losing the resources and distinction of a great university.
Points of Distinction
Areas of Study
Hofstra Online offers a Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science degree which can be completed in as little as 18 months. The program offers students career-oriented coursework with a co-emphasis on theory and practice which prepares them for careers on the cutting edge of technology. The curriculum provides a solid foundation and training for practicing computational scientists, computer specialists or software engineers in business, industry or government. The highly interactive distance learning methodology is designed to challenge and engage students while retaining convenience for working professionals.
Admissions
Applications for admission to the program are accepted continuously throughout the year. There are six starts annually. Students desiring admission should fill out the online admissions form after which they will be contacted by a Hofstra enrollment advisor. Alternatively, applicants can call the school's toll-free number to contact an advisor directly.
Faculty
Faculty members are both noted scholars and excellent teachers. They are successful professionals in the field of computer science and are recognized internationally, nationally, and internally for their professional achievements and scholarly work.
Student Body
The large majority of Hofstra's online students are working professionals who find the educational model of online study a perfect fit for their busy lifestyles. Total Hofstra enrollment (including undergraduate, graduate and law students) is in excess of 12,000 students representing 49 states and 68 countries.
Student Life
The online student experience substitutes a computer for the classroom. All course lectures will be available online and can be replayed as often as desired. All homework, class work, writing assignments and exams are completed and submitted online. A detailed course syllabus is provided to every student. One of the tremendous benefits offered by the online program is the unprecedented level of support available to all students. Students who run into difficulty can contact their course facilitator, program manager and/or other students in the program for help and support.
Hofstra is found in Hempstead, NY. Hempstead is a large suburb. The school is a private, not-for-profit institution. Students can earn degrees up to and including the Doctoral degree at Hofstra.
The range of program offerings available from the school is especially impressive compared to its number of students. Hofstra is known for its programs in media, drama and performing arts, and education and teaching.
Admission to the school is not automatic; not everyone who applies gets in. Three quarters of students in 2007-2008 had SAT verbal scores of at least 540. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 550 and 630.
The school has a tenure system for senior faculty. The full-time faculty at Hofstra is well-paid, which often goes with faculty quality.
Students numbered 12,490 in 2007-2008 at the school.
Hofstra offers dorm rooms to a higher percentage of its students than do most colleges. The school values student athletics, and belongs to the Colonial Athletic Association.
