Howard Payne University

Howard Payne University or HPU, as it is also known, is a private, four-year, non-profit institution situated in Brownwood, Texas. Established in 1889, it was named after Edward Howard Payne, who provided grants which funded the initial university. The institution caters to approximately 1,400 students and has the status of a Baptist institution.

HPU offers a wide range of programs to students. The most popular majors are media and therapy and counseling. Howard Payne also offers courses of study leading to Bachelors degrees in business administration, music, applied arts and sciences, and associates degrees in ministry and health science.

Howard Payne University fields a number of men’s and women’s sports teams which participate in basketball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. The teams participate in the NAIA and the NCAA, division III.

Founded in 1889 for the purpose of preparing students for Christian ministry, Howard Payne University remains dedicated to honoring Christ and serving His Church by providing an educational experience that integrates faith, learning, and living. The university has expanded its original scope to include a full array of undergraduate programs, and a limited number of graduate programs, offered in a traditional residential academic community, where relationships are nurtured and individuals matter. Students, faculty, staff, and administration work together under the shared values of academic excellence, service to others, and Christian integrity. The university also offers selected graduate and undergraduate course work at extended learning centers responsive to the academic needs of the communities served. Howard Payne University maintains a low student-teacher ratio, which contributes to the university's reputation of being a place where everybody is somebody."
