Howard Payne University

Howard Payne University or HPU, as it is also known, is a private, four-year, non-profit institution situated in Brownwood, Texas. Established in 1889, it was named after Edward Howard Payne, who provided grants which funded the initial university. The institution caters to approximately 1,400 students and has the status of a Baptist institution.

HPU offers a wide range of programs to students. The most popular majors are media and therapy and counseling. Howard Payne also offers courses of study leading to Bachelors degrees in business administration, music, applied arts and sciences, and associates degrees in ministry and health science.

Howard Payne University fields a number of men's and women's sports teams which participate in basketball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. The teams participate in the NAIA and the NCAA, division III.
