It was founded in 1940 by the merger of Armour Institute of Technology (established in 1893) and Lewis Institute (established in 1895). The main campus is spread across an area of 103 acres. IIT's sports teams compete in the NAIA Division I Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The teams participate in basketball, soccer, baseball, swimming and diving. They are nicknamed the Scarlet Hawks.
